1. Who we are

2. Information the site processes
Server logs. The hosting provider records standard request data — IP address, user agent, requested URL, referrer and timestamp — to deliver pages, defend against abuse and diagnose faults. Logs are retained for the provider’s standard period and then discarded.
Contact submissions. When a reader uses the contact form or e-mails the editor, the archive receives the name, e-mail address, message and any optional page reference the reader provides, together with the submission time and an IP-based rate-limit token held briefly in memory. This information is used to answer the message, verify evidence and, where a correction is accepted, to record the correction with attribution or anonymously at the reader’s request. Correspondence is retained as part of the archive’s editorial records.
Analytics. The archive uses privacy-respecting, cookie-free aggregate analytics where enabled, limited to page views, referrers and coarse geography. Aggregate counts are retained; individual visits are unidentifiable in the retained data.
Cookies and storage. The site operates free of tracking cookies. Browser storage is used only for interface conveniences such as a remembered filter, and stays on the reader’s device.
3. Legal bases
For readers in jurisdictions that require a legal basis, processing rests on the publisher’s legitimate interest in operating a secure, accurate public archive, and on consent where a reader chooses to write to the editor.
4. Sharing
Information is shared with service providers that host the site and deliver e-mail, each bound to process it on the publisher’s instructions, and with authorities where law requires. Reader information stays out of any sale and out of any advertising use.
5. Information to keep to yourself
The archive is a historical publication. Please refrain from sending account numbers, brokerage credentials, Social Security numbers, investment instructions, money, trade orders or confidential financial records. Any such material received is deleted.
6. Your choices and rights
Readers may request access to, correction of, or deletion of information the archive holds about them, subject to the archive’s need to retain published correction-log entries and editorial records. Requests go to the address above and receive a response within thirty days. Readers in the EEA, UK, Switzerland and applicable U.S. states hold the additional rights their laws provide, including the right to complain to a supervisory authority.
7. Children
The archive is an educational resource for general audiences and is designed for readers aged 13 and over. Information identified as belonging to a child under 13 is deleted on discovery.
8. Security
The site is served over HTTPS with a content-security policy, and form submissions are validated and rate-limited. Reader correspondence is stored in the editor’s access-controlled accounts.
9. International transfers
The site is hosted in the United States. Readers elsewhere accept that their requests are processed there under the safeguards described in this policy.
10. Changes
Revisions to this policy carry a new effective date and are noted in the correction log when material.
